July 23, 2007, is the fifth anniversary of the Downing Street Meeting, the
meeting at Number 10 Downing Street at which the head of British intelligence
reported that Bush and Cheney were intent on invading Iraq and were going to
"fix the intelligence and facts around the policy." The meeting was recorded in
the Downing Street
Minutes which were leaked in May 2005. It was then that we launched AfterDowningStreet.org.
This July 23rd, a Monday, Cindy
Sheehan will lead a march from Arlington National Cemetery (gather there at 10
a.m.) to Capitol Hill, to the office of Congressman John Conyers to ask him to
move forward with impeachment. We will wear orange that day, a color that has
come to stand for nonviolent revolution. We encourage as many people as possible
to join us, and if you cannot, to phone Congressman Conyers' office that day

Terri Johnson of Greensboro was like a lot of other young people with limited options after high school who are set upon by US Army recruiters. She believed the promises of the recruiters who told her that the Army was nothing more than a good shot at a college education and a prosperous future. She discovered, as do many others who sign up, that not only was she signing her life away, but the lives of the people targeted by the illegal and immoral war on Iraq as well. So she did the right thing. She refused to fight.

"Terri didn't want to kill people who had done nothing to her," said Gladys Shipman, Terri's grandmother. Terri struggled hard to make the decision to go against the grain, and bravely chose to refuse to finish basic training. She went Absent Without Leave (AWOL), and was given an "other than honorable discharge".

Terri is one of a growing number of people who have refused to be a part of a program that has caused so much suffering for people in Iraq, and has destroyed the lives of thousands of US troops. For her bravery, "The World Can't Wait – Drive Out the Bush Regime" will honor her with a People's Award at our April 21st rally to Stop the Wars, Impeach Bush and Cheney, and Support Military Resisters!

As April 21st approaches, we're finding all kinds of new people stepping forward to register their disgust with every aspect of the criminal Bush regime: their illegal and murderous war, their use of torture, their criminal neglect of the people of New Orleans, their wiretapping and surveillance of citizens, and their broad attacks on the rights of women, immigrants, gay people and indeed civil society at large. It's heartening to see a new wave of protest emerging on campuses and in communities. But more needs to happen, and more people need to step forward, ready to become activists!

Our organization, the World Can't Wait - Drive Out the Bush Regime, has always made it clear that ONLY the people can stop the deadly trajectory of the Bush regime. That means YOU. Our observation made a year and a half ago that "there will be no savior from the Democratic Party" has been proven even more painfully to be true since the November elections. Despite the fact that the American people overwhelmingly rejected the war by voting in Democrats in the last election, the bill that they voted through actually gives Bush MORE money than he asked for, and even gives a green light to attack Iran, fully-funded. At the same time, they have done NOTHING to roll back the attacks on the rights of the people, to undo the damage done by Hurrican Katrina, or to stop torture. If we want those things to happen, it's up to US to make them happen.

YOU can make April 21st the ringing success that it needs to be. YOU can help bring forward the numbers of people who represent the all-too-silent MAJORITY of people who want the war to end, and who want Bush and company IMPEACHED for war crimes, and crimes against humanity.

Out of war nations acquire
additional territory, if they are victorious. They just take it. This newly
acquired territory promptly is exploited by the few -- the selfsame few who
wrung dollars out of blood in the war. The general public shoulders the
bill.
And what is this bill?
This bill renders a horrible
accounting. Newly placed gravestones. Mangled bodies. Shattered minds. Broken
hearts and homes. Economic instability. Depression and all its attendant
miseries. Back-breaking taxation for generations and generations.

I met the
aunt of number 3291 today. I was sitting in seat 11E and a flight attendant gave
me a note from a woman in seat 33C: "My nephew was killed in Iraq yesterday. I
would like to meet you."

Seat belt light or not, I headed back
toward the rear of the airplane. We held each other and she said: "What can I
do? My brother was in the Army and he initially supported the effort. Yesterday,
he made a sign with a picture of his son saying: 'Murdered by George Bush.'" I
prayed for the Universe to give the families strength yesterday as I do everyday
our soldiers are killed, as I pray for the Iraqis and their families who are
also murdered unnecessarily. I don't often get to meet the people I pray for in
such a timely manner.

Four of our brave and abused troops were
killed in King George's escalation of the conflict in Iraq. Ten over the Easter
weekend while George was hiding out at his ranch in Crawford. George Bush and
his bloody gang of war-bandits have caused so much pain and heartache in the
world without so much as a blink of the eye. Number 3291's aunt recounted how
she heard her sister 'screaming for her son," on the other end of the phone.
Number 3291's family is just beginning to realize the true meaning of broken
heart and betrayals.

Number 3291 has a name: Brian. The only thing
I know for sure about Brian was that he was in the army, he was probably blown
up by an IED (which could have been avoided with an IED detector in his
vehicle), and he has a loving aunt named Sheryl. His family lives in North
Carolina and that's where his body will be returning to under the cover of
darkness to hide the shame of the Bush Regime.

Brian will never be
a number to his family or friends. To the few people in this country who still
incredibly support this horror and his war, Brian's sacrifice will be noted as
"freedom isn't free," or "he volunteered." To the anti-war movement, Brian
will be commemorated in a candlelight vigil when the 4000th troop is killed in
Iraq. To the man sitting next to me in seat 11D, Brian is a non-entity because
he: has no opinion on the occupation one way or the other because he has no
"time to worry about it." Trust me though, that's all Brian's mom did for the
entire time he was in Iraq and there are 160,000 moms who lie awake at night
worried about their child and Iraqi moms who never know when the last "I love
you," is the last one forever.

To me Brian represents a failure. I
have been struggling with all my energy and resources to insure that Brian's mom
never had to fall on the floor screaming in agony or so that Aunt Sheryl would
never have to take a sad and lonely trip across the country to be with her
family in this terrible occasion for mourning. Every death since Casey's has hit
me with a fresh assault of suffering. How can my wounds heal when so many new
ones are being opened up on a daily basis in three countries that are being
devastated by the Bush doctrine of inflicting immeasurable damage with his war
for profit being masqueraded as a war on terror?

The anti-war
movement is failing in many areas. First of all, like the man sitting next to
me, there are too many apathetic people in this country. How can anyone still be
so indifferent to so much death and destruction? Even the people who are still
confused and support the war have an opinion. The anti-war movement is also
failing in its lack of influence on the policy makers. When such pro-occupation
entities as MoveOn are being hailed as the "anti-war left" and our Congressional
leadership are listening to them and using their corrupt polls as tools to
hammer theoretically anti-war Reps into voting for a bill that would extend our
troop presence in Iraq indefinitely, then the true anti-war movement has not
been effective in getting our message out.

Another goal that the
anti-war movement should have would be to move the overwhelming majority of
Americans who are against the occupation of Iraq off of their couches and into
the streets. The leaders of our country are in the obscenely deep pockets of the
war machine and are exceedingly comfortable there. Only a massive electoral
revolt will be able to pick the pockets of the war profiteers and force our
elected officials to represent us and not the wealthy.

Brian's
family, my family, 3293 other families, our military families who are
financially and emotionally strapped by the constant deployments and getting
ready for deployments are sacrificing too much on the altar of greed. The Iraqi
people who did not ask for Bush's help are sacrificing horribly on this imperial
altar. The rest of this nation is not sacrificing the way that so many others
have. I am working so you don't have to.

But if we, as a nation,
want to end the farce of false patriotism to justify wars for profit and empire,
we will have to sacrifice until it hurts. In this cleansing act will come
redemption, because we can be assured that all of the children of the world are
safe and sound. If we don't work to end the absolute stranglehold of violence we
are clutched in, then we deserve what we get.

move toward peace…at all costs.

George Bush and Dick Cheney must be impeached for war crimes and crimes against humanity! Millions are against the war, spying, torture, the abandoning of Katrina survivors, a spreading theocracy and suppression of science—and want the whole disaster of the Bush regime to be brought to a halt. The more we demand impeachment, Bush’s war options will grow more limited; the more his war crimes are exposed, the greater the impetus for his removal and repudiation.
It is time we rise to this challenge in unity with each other. The opposition to the war people feel in their hearts must become something they put on the streets. Resistance to the war from within the military by people like Lt. Ehren Watada and many, many others must be supported and encouraged by people outside of the military. And the invasion of Iran MUST NOT HAPPEN.

Cindy Sheehan is an internationally known mom and peace & social justice advocate whose son, Army Specialist Casey A. Sheehan, was killed in action in Sadr City, Baghdad, on April 4, 2004. As an act of protest against the war, in August 2005 Cindy took a stand outside of George Bush's home in Crawford, Texas, asking what noble cause her son died for. She is also a central leader in the movement to impeach President George W. Bush.

Veteran peace worker ED KINANE will fly from Syracuse to Iran on Wednesday, Feb. 28. Kinane will be part of a 14-day civilian diplomacy delegation organized by the international peace group, Fellowship of Reconciliation.This 25-member friendship delegation is the third in a series of F.O.R. peace missions to Iran.... The missions work to build solidarity between the people of the United States and the people of Iran.

Kinane says, "These days saber rattling is bringing the world to the brink of further war. We civilians can't sit by and let governments destroy us all."
A native and resident of Syracuse's southside, Kinane is a graduate of S.U.'s Maxwell School of Citizenship. Since the late seventies Kinane has been active with the Syracuse Peace Council. In 2003 Kinane spent five months in IRAQ with the human rights group, Voices in the Wilderness. Kinane resided in Baghdad before and during the U.S. invasion. He returned to Baghdad several months later to report on the U.S. occupation.

A veteran of various international peace initiatives, Kinane has
worked with Peace Brigades International in Guatemala (1988), El Salvador (1989), Sri Lanka (1991), and Haiti (1993). In 1996 and in 1999 Kinane spent 14 months in federal prison for his outspoken nonviolent activism against the U.S. Army's School of the Americas -- notorious for training Latin American soldiers the craft of torture and "anti-insurgency" The F.O.R. The Bush Regime has been an unmitigated and worldwide tragedy, and has left us mourning hundreds of thousands of dead due to illegal wars, torture, and the militarization of the US/Mexico border. But in keeping with the tradition of the "dia de los muertos" as it is celebrated in Mexico, this will not be a somber vigil...this memorial for those who have died will be in the form of a dedication to fight like hell for the living, and to drive from power the criminal regime responsible for these deaths. He also visited a camp for handicapped, seriously and chronically ill children. Many of these children and families' greatest hope often is in the very stem cell research that the bu**sh** has banned.
How could parents and teachers allow a person who lies so often about science, subverts our democracy, and cuts funding so important to our children and families, and has caused so much death and destruction throughout our world, to visit their children?
That is not an honor, it is dishonerable and disgusting.

The notion that we, the organizers, need to be 100% sober in assessing the events of the 5th could not be closer to the truth. I’m not trying to denounce our efforts, nor do I wish to undermine the wonderful things that happened on that day, but the challenges that are now upon us far surpass the successes that we enjoyed on October 5.

One year ago, those who opposed us would read the Call to Action and denounce the fact that their government was justifying torture. They had been told by the right-wing think machine that the instances of torture at Abu Ghraib were just isolated incidents of several individual GIs committing war crimes. The government assured us that they would be reprimanded. However, as more and more "isolated incidents" of torture surfaced, the government found itself in yet another lie. So what did they do? They actually legalized torture, with sickening support from Democrats and Republicans alike, concealing it inside of a bill that promises to maintain our safety as Americans: the Military Commissions Act of 2006. The exact same forces of opposition, one year later, have now abandoned their former argument, “Yes, torture is wrong, and those who got caught doing it will be reprimanded,” and have adopted the new outrageous notion that it’s acceptable to torture another human being if he or she is deemed to be an “enemy combatant”. The good news is that the more independently minded supporters of the Bush Regime have been somewhat irked by the legalization of torture. Our support has grown slightly due to these new atrocities. The bad news is that the Bush Regime seems to be one step ahead of us, and they are amazingly talented at convincing their support base that everything they do is for the betterment of the country’s safety.

The events of October 5 shed some light on this issue. The point about torture in the Call was validated mere days before the 5th, and it helped to organize people that were upset by the new bill. But as we all rushed to tighten the odds and ends of our own October 5 events, these new outrages seemed to stay on the periphery of our focus. We had tunneled in on increasing our numbers for the demonstration, securing speakers for the rally, finalizing the permit’s details with the city, and putting final touches on props and banners for the day’s events. This left new outrages unaddressed, only to come in full force after the day was over. We were slapped in the face by the legalization of torture, impending war on Iran, the newest attacks on immigrants, and the upcoming Supreme Court case that could very well secure the demolition of Roe v. Wade.

The little successes incurred on October 5 must be acknowledged, and we should feel good about what we accomplished. However, we are faced with an incredible amount of struggle. The Bush Regime has increased its speed and so must we. While many people will no doubt become angered by these new outrages, they are likely to fall into a deep despair unless there is a movement to empower them to want to act on their angers. The momentum gained on October 5 cannot be left alone to wind down; it must be kept going, and it must continue to gain strength in order to continue to fight the increasingly criminal acts of the Bush Regime.

This is an important topic for discussion, mainly because we always need to keep our goals in our sights. And since we've broken into a hard sprint in the planning process for the 5th, the day now being a little over a week away, we have absolutely NO TIME to waste on these sorts of things in the hour and a half given in our weekly monday night meetings. So, short of going out for coffee at a common time and wrestling with it that way, this is a good way to keep the discussion going.

October 5 at UNCG

So October 5th is also "Founders Day" at UNCG. That's great and all but of c ourse I got the message as a "heads up" because the place will most likely be crawling with alumni and therefore increased cop presence--- but whatever! I like the idea of all the alums present around campus that day. OH and also, the STAND group at UNCG is having a national day of awareness on the 5th as well. They will be building a mock-refuge camp in front of the library in the "free speech zone" (ugh we still have those???!). So that can only work to raise more discussion of students becoming ACTIVE... even if it's not directly "anti-Bush" like our group is, but of course once you get into the politics of the genocide in Darfur and the conditions of why its like that, yeah, it has almost everything to do with US imperialism. But overall, just the wide range of extremely public displays of resistance, protest, and injustice awareness around campus is going to make for an amazing day, one that will generate some energy out of the lifeless general public of UNCG.

I'm psyched.

"Thankfully, George W. Bush only has two and a half more years in office. With the horrors he has inflicted on our own society and on the world, it will be good to see him go. I guarantee the pendulum will swing back towards the left and we will be saved by a Democratic candidate that will fix everything. With my faith, I will vote in 2008, and this time, I will not make the same mistake. Everything will be fine."

Unfortunately, the above statement describes the sentiments of many young Americans today. Perhaps their federal college grants have been cut. Perhaps they have a family member or close friend currently serving in Iraq. Maybe they are even seeing their human rights being quickly stripped away by some fundamentalist agenda. No matter who you are, it is safe to say that the Bush Regime has somehow negatively affected every young American. The problem is, we have become so apathetic and complacent that we continue to only look towards the upcoming elections with the fallacy that "politics as usual" will somehow save us all from being enslaved by a fascist regime.

Silence and paralysis amongst today’s youth has become all too common. It seems we have become so engrained with our country’s systematic political system that it is hard to imagine actually making a difference for massive social change. We are told day after day that our right to vote is the most precious right we have, and that unconditionally siding with our Democratic candidates is the best possible route to seeing this country saved from the looming fascism that threatens our basic freedoms every day. But consider the following statements:

"We cannot take any option off the table in sending clear threats in sending a clear message to the current leadership of Iran."
"America’s military must stand second to none. We will use force when we have to, including preemptively, without asking anyone’s permission."
"The president and I share the belief that marriage is between a man and a woman."
"I am and always have been pro-life."

These are statements made by Democrats: Hillary Clinton, Joe Biden, John Kerry, and Bob Casey Jr, respectively. Our Democratic "representatives" that have actively tried to hold Bush responsible for his crimes have been shot down by their own colleagues. When Russ Feingold proposed a mere censure against Bush for illegally wiretapping without a court order, he only got two of his fellow Democratic senators’ approval, even when polls showed 62% of the country favored the censure. As Sunsara Taylor states in her article, Why the Democrats Won’t Stand and Fight and Why You Must, "even when they sharply disagree, the Democrats would rather capitulate to the Bush program than to allow the kind of upheaval that could threaten to destabilize their system." We cannot rely on such an irresolute sector of power to end the crimes committed by the Bush Regime.

Today, ending this oppressive and criminal Regime is more important than ever:

These crimes against human rights and humanity itself have got to halt before further enduring damage is done. And we truly cannot wait until 2008 for this Regime to end, nor can we allow its oppressive decrees to permanently remain in the principles of our way of life.

"Silence and paralysis are NOT acceptable. That which you will not RESIST and mobilize to stop, you will learn—or be forced—to accept."
This statement from the World Can’t Wait Call to Action basically sums up what needs to be done. If we are to take responsibility for our rights, we need a massive movement of millions of people saying "No more!" to this Regime. The right to dissent, to oppose your government and fight for what’s right, is, in fact, the most precious right you have, and this right extends far beyond the voting booths. If we are to be backed by our representatives, we need to make them see that there are millions of people who have had enough and are acting for themselves before we will ever get the attention of our governing bodies. This is why the World Can’t Wait is calling for you to come out on October 5th and join our Day of Mass Resistance.

As the World Can’t Wait Call states, "History is full of examples where people who had right on their side fought against tremendous odds and were victorious. And it is also full of examples of people passively hoping to wait it out, only to get swallowed up by a horror beyond what they ever imagined. The future is unwritten. WHICH ONE WE GET IS UP TO US."

Things are rolling, but if October 5th is going to be the historic day that it desperately needs to be, we need YOU to get involved and start organizing.
Bush is not even slowing down...he is escalating his fascist program. He will appear before the UN tomorrow to clear the way for an invasion (or worse) of Iran, meanwhile he has stepped up the charge toward the outright legalization of torture by US personnel. It's now or never, folks.

As a new WCW person in Asheboro said, "The time for petitions is over. I'm through signing petitions. It's time to get people out in the streets."
